An Amateur is a Go player who is not a professional player. In Go communities and competitions, the term identifies a player’s status and the ranking system in which they compete.
Amateurs may be assigned kyu or dan ranks within an amateur ranking system. Amateur dan ranks are separate from professional dan ranks, so an amateur remains distinct from a professional even when holding a high dan rank. Amateur dan ranks should not be directly equated with professional dan ranks: the ranking standards and systems differ.
