Cut

A cut is a move that separates two or more opposing stones or groups that are connected, or that could otherwise connect. The cutting stone is played at a cutting point, preventing the connection and leaving the separated groups to defend independently.

The aim may be to divide the opponent’s stones, attack the resulting groups, or gain forcing moves and tactical profit from their lack of connection. A cut is the act or result of separation; a cutting point is the vulnerable location where it can be played. A cross-cut is a specific shape in which both sides cut through each other.

A cut is not automatically profitable. The cutting stone may be captured, or the opponent may obtain enough compensation by attacking the groups that have been separated.
