A Go game that uses preset black stones to balance a difference in playing strength.

Handicap Go is a game in which the stronger player gives the weaker player a skill-adjusting advantage. Normally, several black stones are placed on the board before White makes the first move. The number of stones is generally based on the difference between the players’ ranks. After the stones have been placed, Black usually plays first.
The purpose is to reduce the effect of unequal playing strength and make a more balanced game possible. Unlike an even game, handicap Go uses extra stones—not komi—as its primary balancing mechanism. Exact stone placement, first-move conventions, and any accompanying komi may vary according to the ruleset or local practice.
