Tsumego is a Go problem presented for study and solution, especially a problem about whether a group lives or dies. The solver must identify the critical move, then read the opponent’s best responses and the variations that follow.
Working on tsumego develops reading, tactical vision, tesuji recognition, and life-and-death skill. Tsumego refers to the problem-solving exercise itself, whereas shikatsu refers specifically to the life-and-death subject or status being analyzed. A correct solution assumes best play by both sides: an intuitive move can be wrong if the relevant variations have not been read.
