Aya

Aya is the unsettled potential in a Go position: unresolved possibilities, complications, and latent resources that may become important through later play. It arises from relationships between stones, weaknesses, and possible follow-up sequences that have not yet been settled.

Players can create, exploit, or remove aya with subsequent moves. Recognizing it helps assess whether a position contains hidden tactical or strategic possibilities beyond its immediate appearance. Aya is broader than aji: aya describes a position’s overall potential for complications, while aji more specifically refers to latent potential—often a weakness or resource—left by stones or moves. Aya is not necessarily an immediate tactical opportunity, and it may disappear or change as the position develops.
