Shape

The quality and structure of a local stone formation in Go.

Also known as

Katachi

Shape is the overall arrangement and configuration of stones in a local position, especially the way those stones work together. It arises from their spacing, connections, liberties, and relationships with surrounding stones. A shape can be efficient or inefficient, and it may create either strengths or weaknesses.

Players assess shape to judge whether a formation uses its stones effectively and supports goals such as connection, attack, defense, life, or influence. Shape concerns the quality and structure of a formation, while a specific shape name identifies one particular pattern or configuration.

A shape is not inherently good or bad in isolation. Its value depends on the surrounding position, the tactical status of the stones, and the strategic purpose of the formation.
