base

The space and strategic support that help a group make eyes and live.

In Go, a base is the space and position secured by a group that gives it room to make eyes and establish life. A group develops a base by occupying or controlling enough space, commonly near a corner or along a side. From there, the opponent cannot easily attack without allowing eyes or territory to form.

A base supports the group’s survival and makes it more resistant to attack or reduction. It represents potential living space and strategic support, not an eye itself, and it does not necessarily constitute completed territory. A base also does not guarantee unconditional life: the opponent may still invade, reduce, or attack the group.
