deshi

A pupil or disciple who studies Go under a teacher or master.

Also known as

studentpupildisciple

A deshi is a student, pupil, or disciple of a Go teacher—traditionally, someone who follows and studies under a master. The term highlights a teacher–student relationship in which Go knowledge and practice are transmitted through sustained instruction and apprenticeship.

Unlike an insei, who is specifically a professional Go trainee, a deshi is a general pupil or disciple. The relationship described by the term is not a formal rank and does not indicate a particular level of playing strength.
