Teaching game

A Go game played primarily to teach, explain, and improve rather than to compete.

Instructional gameShidou Go

A teaching game is a Go game in which a stronger player—typically a teacher—plays against a student to demonstrate concepts and help the student improve. The teacher may explain moves during pauses or review the game afterward. A handicap may be used, but it is not an essential feature.

The main purpose is personalized instruction through practical play, discussion, and analysis. Unlike an ordinary competitive game, teaching comes first; unlike a simultaneous exhibition, it normally consists of a single game with one student. The format varies by teacher and setting. The term does not by itself imply a handicap, a professional teacher, or commentary on every move.
