Down

Down describes a move toward the board edge, usually toward the bottom of a diagram. The stone or group advances toward the lower edge rather than toward the center; which direction counts as “down” depends on the diagram’s orientation.

A down move can extend or settle a group toward the edge, often helping it maintain a base or continue along the side. The term describes direction, not whether the move is good or bad. It is the counterpart of Up and is distinct from a generic extension, which may head in another direction. Remember that “down” is diagram-relative: it normally means toward the bottom of the displayed board, not toward a fixed board coordinate.
