up

Up (also called an upward move) describes a move directed toward the center of the board, usually when played from an edge. It is a directional and strategic description of a move or sequence, rather than a fixed coordinate or screen direction.

The direction is judged in relation to the nearby edge or stones. A move that goes away from that edge and toward the center is “up.” Its counterpart is down, which moves toward the edge. Thus, up does not necessarily mean moving toward the top of a diagram: the relevant edge and the local board orientation determine the meaning. Always identify which edge is being discussed before applying the term.
