Geta

Geta—also called a Net—is a Go tactic in which a stone or group is enclosed by a surrounding move or sequence. The surrounding stones restrict the target’s liberties and escape routes, so capture becomes unavoidable or highly likely without necessarily attacking it with a direct atari.

The purpose is to trap and capture stones efficiently, especially when a ladder is unavailable or would fail. Unlike a ladder, which drives stones along a repeated diagonal sequence of ataris, a Geta holds the target inside a surrounding net. The shape must still be checked carefully: a cutting point, hidden aji, or tactical counterattack may let the target escape if the net is incomplete.
