Tesuji
A precise tactical move that makes the most of a position’s local possibilities.
A tesuji is a particularly effective move or short sequence that uses a position’s tactical possibilities with exceptional efficiency. It commonly exploits a vital point, a shortage of liberties, a cutting point, eye shape, or a forcing sequence. The result may be difficult to discover through ordinary play.
A tesuji can gain a tactical advantage, save stones, attack or kill a group, connect, cut, capture, or secure the best local result. Suji refers more broadly to the underlying technique, pattern, or tactical idea, while tesuji usually means the specific skillful move that applies it. Its value always depends on the surrounding position and the resulting sequence: a move that appears to be a tesuji may fail if the opponent has a stronger reply.
