gote

A move or sequence that gives up the initiative and lets the opponent play next with sente.

Gote is a move or sequence that ends without retaining sente. After the local sequence is complete, the opponent can choose the next significant move rather than being compelled to answer in that area. In this sense, gote describes who has the initiative for the next play.

Gote may be the right choice when a locally completed result, a defensive necessity, or another gain outweighs the loss of initiative. It is the counterpart of sente, but it does not mean that the move is objectively bad. A move can be locally gote and still be the best move because its result is large enough or necessary.
