Ipponmichi

Ipponmichi is a forced sequence in which each move determines a narrow, or essentially unavoidable, continuation. The players follow a clearly constrained chain of moves because alternative replies generally fail tactically or are inferior.

Recognizing an ipponmichi helps you read the necessary continuation efficiently and accurately, rather than spending equal effort on choices that are not genuinely viable. It is more constrained than an ordinary sequence: its defining feature is that the opponent’s replies are effectively forced.

Do not label a sequence ipponmichi without checking credible alternative replies and tactical refutations. A move may look natural or urgent while still allowing a sound defensive or counterattacking option.
