Order of play

The sequence in which moves are made, often determining who keeps the initiative and what replies remain available.

Also known as

Move order

In Go, order of play is the sequence or ordering of moves in a game or local position. Choosing between otherwise related plays in a different order can change whether a move is sente or gote, alter the opponent’s available replies, affect ko threats, and sometimes change the final result. The aim is to find the most effective sequence and avoid losing timing or allowing a better reply.

Order of play concerns the sequencing of moves, not the identity or shape of any individual move. A locally optimal sequence can still be globally bad if it gives up sente or conflicts with more important priorities elsewhere on the board.
