Manbang

The Korean convention for a full nine-stone handicap game.

Also known as

Mahn bangnine-stone handicap

Manbang—also known as Mahn bang or a nine-stone handicap—is a Korean Go convention in which Black receives the maximum standard handicap of nine stones. Before White plays, Black places all nine handicap stones on the standard star points.

The arrangement is intended to balance a game between players with a large difference in playing strength. Manbang refers specifically to a nine-stone handicap; it is not a general term for handicap games of any size. The exact komi and some procedural details can vary according to the ruleset or local playing convention, so those points should be checked when they matter.
