Sen-ai-sen

A traditional Go match handicap in which the weaker player takes Black in two of every three games.

Also known as

alternate black

Sen-ai-sen is a Go handicap arrangement for a multi-game match. Over each three-game cycle, the weaker player plays Black twice and White once, while the stronger player takes Black once. This 2:1 color allocation can balance a relatively small difference in playing strength without using fixed-stone handicap games.

The match rules may determine the precise order of the colors. Unlike tagai-sen, in which the players receive Black and White equally often, sen-ai-sen gives the weaker player Black more frequently. It gives Black less often than josen, where the weaker player plays Black in every game. The term describes color allocation across games, not a fixed number of handicap stones, and modern rules or match formats may arrange the order differently.
