Mobility
A strategic measure of how freely and effectively a stone or group can develop options across the board.
Mobility is the degree to which a stone or group can move, extend, connect, escape, or otherwise develop effective options. It is assessed through the group’s available legal and strategically useful continuations, including extensions, connections, escapes, and attacks. Mobility count and mobility difference can be used as related measures.
Mobility helps evaluate the flexibility, effectiveness, and strategic potential of stones or groups. It is broader than liberties: liberties are empty adjacent points, while mobility concerns the useful moves and options that the stones or group can actually develop. A group may have many liberties without having good mobility. Cutting points, surrounding stones, or tactically forced sequences can also reduce apparent mobility.
