connect-and-die

A tesuji that captures stones by making their forced connection fatal.

Also known as

Oiotoshi

Connect-and-die is a tactical tesuji in which an opponent’s stones are forced to connect to another group, after which the connected stones are captured together. The attacking move creates a forcing sequence—often through atari or a shortage of liberties. Connecting is unavoidable, or seems necessary, but the resulting chain has no viable escape and dies.

The aim is to capture multiple enemy stones by exploiting their forced connection and shared shortage of liberties. Unlike an ordinary connection, the connection itself is the losing move: joining the stones does not allow them to escape successfully. The exact liberty count and the surrounding stones are decisive. If the resulting group can live or escape, the tactic is not a connect-and-die.
