In Go, a connection is the act of joining stones or groups belonging to the same player so that they function as a connected unit. A player may place a stone in a gap, making separated friendly stones directly or functionally connected. The connection can be direct or indirect.
Connections help prevent cutting, strengthen groups, and preserve shared liberties and tactical cooperation. The term names the connecting action or technique, while “connected” describes the resulting relationship or shape. An apparent connection is not always secure: the opponent may still be able to cut it, capture stones, or create a tactical weakness.
