A capturing tesuji that corrals a chain into a crane’s-nest shape through successive ataris.

Crane’s nest is a named capturing tesuji. The attacker plays a sequence of ataris from suitable directions, steadily reducing the opposing chain’s liberties and steering its stones into a compact formation resembling a crane’s nest. Once the forcing sequence is complete, the trapped group or chain is captured because it has no way to escape.
This pattern is not simply an ordinary ladder. It is recognized by the characteristic crane’s-nest formation that develops during the capture. Its success depends on the exact liberty count, the geometry of the edge or corner, and the surrounding stones. A sequence that looks similar may fail if the opponent has an escape route or a connecting move, so the position must be read precisely before committing to the tesuji.
