amashi

amashi is a Go strategy of taking solid territory while accepting—or deliberately allowing—the opponent to build outside influence or a moyo. The player emphasizes secure territorial gains and may permit invasions or extensions that give the opponent outward strength, rather than contesting every potential framework immediately.

The purpose is to obtain reliable points and reduce uncertainty by exchanging influence or potential for territory that is already secure. Amashi is therefore a strategic policy, not merely a single territorial move. It contrasts with influence- or moyo-oriented play. The exchange is risky if the opponent’s influence becomes too large or if the territory gained is insufficient; in that case, the balance may favor the opponent.
