moyo

A framework of potential territory created by stones and their surrounding influence.

A moyo is a large area of potential territory outlined or supported by stones, especially during the opening and middle game. The stones influence an open region without fully occupying or enclosing every point in it.

The aim of a moyo is to develop territorial potential while preserving strategic flexibility and influence. Unlike secure territory, it is not yet definitively controlled: the opponent may invade or reduce it, or the area may be transformed through play. A moyo is therefore potential rather than guaranteed territory. Its value depends on the strength of the surrounding stones and on the opponent’s ability to challenge it.
