A diagonal wedge that presses between opposing stones to separate them or threaten a cut.

Atekomi, also known as a wedge, is a move played diagonally into an opposing configuration, typically between stones or groups. It occupies an inside diagonal point and presses against the connection or unity of those stones.
The aim is to separate the opposing stones, create a cutting point, or obtain a forcing sequence and tactical profit. The opponent may have to connect, capture, or allow a cut. Atekomi is defined by this wedging function—not simply by being a diagonal move or an attachment.
Its success depends on reading the opponent’s replies. A wedge that appears forcing can fail when surrounding stones give the opponent an effective counterattack.
