Counter-atari
A tactical atari played in response to an atari, forcing the opponent to answer a new capture threat.
Counter-atari (also written Counter atari) is a move played in response to an atari that places one or more opposing stones in atari. Rather than simply answering the threatened capture, the player creates an immediate capture threat of their own. The opponent may have to respond to this new atari before resolving the original threat.
This tactic can provide a forcing move, save the threatened stones, create a favorable exchange, or turn the initiative against the opponent. It is not merely an ordinary defensive move that escapes capture: the response must itself be an atari. Its value depends on whether the opponent can safely ignore it or exploit the resulting liberties, capturing race, or tactical sequence.
