Degiri

A tactical push that cuts through and separates connected opposing stones.

Also known as

push and cutpush-and-cut

Degiri is a push-and-cut move. The played stone advances between or against opposing stones while occupying a cutting point, breaking their connection. In this way, the move combines the pressure of a push with the tactical effect of a cut.

Its aim is to split the opposing stones, begin a tactical fight, and gain influence or initiative from the resulting cutting sequence. Unlike an ordinary push or an ordinary cut, Degiri specifically pushes through a formation while cutting it. Its success depends on reading the full sequence: if the cut is unsound, the pushing stone may be attacked or sacrificed.
