Push
A move that presses against an opposing line while advancing your stones.
Also known as
A Push is a move that advances your stones along a line while pressing against the opponent’s adjacent stones. The pushing stone is typically played directly in front of, or alongside, an opposing chain. This continues the line of play and often forms a sequence of parallel stones while maintaining connected influence.
A push may aim to gain outside strength, build territory or influence, restrict the opponent’s movement, or induce a favorable exchange. It differs from an extension, which usually develops your stones without directly pressing against opposing stones. Repeated pushing is not automatically beneficial: it can give the opponent strength or thickness, so evaluate the resulting exchange and the direction of play before continuing. Oshi is also used for this tactic.
