A sustained attacking method that exploits weak stones or groups.
Also known as
Bullying, also known as Ijime, is the repeated attacking or harassment of weak opposing stones or a weak group. The attacker looks for a lack of eyes, liberties, or connection and keeps the group under pressure.
By using forcing moves around the weak group, the attacker can restrict its movement, worsen its shape, reduce its liberties, or make it respond while gaining profit or influence. The aim may be territory, influence, bad shape, or other attack-related gains while keeping sente.
Bullying describes a general attacking method, not one move or fixed tactical pattern, and it is broader than simply giving atari. It works only when the attacking stones are strong enough; otherwise, the harassment may be an overplay that leaves the attacker vulnerable.
