Overplay
A move whose ambition or risk goes beyond what the position can support.
Also known as
Overplay (also called Uchisugi) is a move that tries to accomplish too much for the position. It often leaves the player’s stones overextended or creates weaknesses that the opponent can exploit.
The move exceeds the position’s tactical or strategic limits. Accurate defense or a well-timed counterattack can punish it by attacking the overextended stones or taking advantage of the weaknesses it creates. The term describes excessive ambition or unjustified aggression, not an ordinary attacking move that remains sound.
An overplay is therefore not merely an aggressive or difficult move: its objective or risk is excessive and vulnerable to a proper refutation. Judgment depends on the position and accurate reading. A move that looks excessive may still be justified if its tactical consequences work.
