Squeeze

A forcing tactic that compresses an opponent’s stones into an inefficient shape.

Shibori

A Squeeze is a forcing tactic in which the opponent’s stones are pressed into a cramped position. The attacking move limits their liberties, connections, or workable replies, often by offering a stone or forcing a capture. As the stones become tightly packed against the attacker’s stones or the board edge, further forcing moves or a cut may become possible.

The aim is to gain outside strength, exploit cutting points, capture or restrict the squeezed stones, and turn the local advantage into profit. A squeeze is a sequence or tactical effect—not merely one push or clamp—defined by forced compression and the opponent’s resulting lack of efficient shape. Read it carefully: if the opponent can capture without becoming cramped, escape cleanly, or counterattack, the supposed squeeze may fail.
