Invasion
A deep move into an opponent’s moyo to reduce its potential or establish a living group.
Also known as
An Invasion is a move played inside an opponent’s established or developing territorial framework, usually a moyo. Its purpose is to substantially reduce or destroy the framework’s potential, force the opponent to respond, or sometimes make a group live in the opponent’s area.
The invading stones enter the opponent’s sphere of influence and must use the available space, nearby weaknesses, and tactical resources to survive or escape. An invasion is generally deeper and more committed than a reduction from outside: a reduction approaches or limits the framework without committing as deeply.
The invading group may be attacked or sealed in. If it cannot live, escape, or gain sufficient compensation, the invasion may be an overplay.
