Jaw

A Jaw is a formation of three friendly stones surrounding one empty point on three sides, resembling a tiger’s mouth or jaw. The empty point is normally protected: an opponent who tries to play there will usually self-capture. At the same time, the shape connects or reinforces the stones on either side, making it difficult to cut between them.

Unlike an ordinary eye, a Jaw is primarily a connection shape formed by stones around a shared point. It is also known as a Tiger’s mouth shape. The point is not absolutely unplayable in every position, however. A capture, a ko threat, or an unusual liberty configuration can change its status.
