Clutch

A capturing move that encloses an enemy stone between two friendly stones.

Also known as

Kakae

A clutch is a move that captures an opposing stone by playing on the side opposite an already existing friendly stone. The new stone removes the enemy stone’s last liberty, leaving that stone held between two stones of your own.

This tactic is often used to capture a stone while settling a cross-cut or reinforcing the connection between your stones. It is more specific than a clamp: a clamp is a tactical attachment around an opposing stone, whereas a clutch specifically refers to the enclosing capture.

The capture succeeds only if the opposing stone has no liberty remaining after the move. Check the surrounding tactical situation carefully, since an apparently successful clutch may be unsafe if the capturing stones can be counterattacked or captured.
