Clamp

A tactical attachment that restricts an opponent’s stone and creates forcing opportunities.

Hasami-tsuke

A Clamp is a tactical move that occupies a constraining point adjacent to an opponent’s stone. By clamping the stone, it limits the opponent’s available replies and often threatens to cut or capture. The move is commonly played as a close attachment from which the opponent cannot extend freely without allowing a tactical follow-up, such as a cut or squeeze.

The aim is to restrict the opponent’s stones, induce a forced response, and exploit weaknesses in their connection or liberties. A clamp is more specific than an ordinary attachment: it is chosen for its constraining tactical effect. It also differs from a pincer, which attacks from a distance. Its success depends heavily on surrounding stones and liberties; without sufficient support, the clamp may be ineffective or let the opponent counterattack.
