Mokuhazushi

Mokuhazushi is a first-play point at 5-3 in a corner, including the equivalent 3-5 orientation. The stone is placed on the third line in one direction from the edge and the fifth line in the perpendicular direction. It is therefore one line farther from the corner than a komoku along one axis.

This is an uncommon corner opening. Its position balances territorial prospects with outside development and can lead to distinctive joseki. Mokuhazushi differs from komoku at 3-4, hoshi at 4-4, and takamoku at 5-4. The 5-3 and 3-5 placements are the same opening-point type after rotation; which coordinate comes first depends on the orientation being described.
