Motare

An attacking plan that uses one opposing group as support while pursuing another target.

Also known as

Leaning attack

Motare is a strategic attacking method in which a move leans against an opponent’s stones or group. That contact provides support while the attacker pursues a target elsewhere. The attacker typically plays against a strong or relatively stable opposing group, encouraging a response that helps attack a nearby group, gain influence, or secure profit.

The aim is to attack efficiently without committing the attacking stones too deeply, often turning pressure into strength, influence, or territory. Motare describes an attacking method or plan, not one fixed move shape; it is not synonymous with every attachment or shoulder hit. If the target escapes successfully, or if the supporting stones are poorly positioned, the opponent may gain strength and the attack can become counterproductive.
