sabaki
A flexible tactical way to handle weak stones through light shape, exchanges, and efficient escape.
Sabaki is a tactical method for dealing with weak stones or an unsettled group. Instead of trying to make the group completely alive at once, the player uses flexible moves, often accepting a limited sacrifice or exchanging stones to secure a workable position.
Typical sabaki uses light shape, attachments, forcing moves, exchanges, and sacrifices to gain eyespace, connection, mobility, or an escape route. The aim is to settle the group efficiently and avoid being sealed in, attacked, or forced into heavy shape. Sabaki is the process of handling a weak group; shinogi more specifically emphasizes fighting to survive or escape under attack.
Sabaki does not necessarily make the group fully alive immediately. The position may remain unsettled, provided the stones have gained enough outside profit or flexibility to reduce the opponent’s attacking potential.
