nurui

A judgment that a move or style of play is too slow, slack, or insufficiently forceful for the position.

In Go, nurui describes a move or manner of play that is lukewarm or slack. It fails to respond with enough urgency or strength to what the position demands. The move underplays the situation, often allowing the opponent to take sente, secure profit, strengthen a group, or exploit an opportunity that was missed.

Nurui identifies a problem of timing, intensity, or efficiency in context. It does not simply mean quiet or small: a quiet move can be exactly right, while a nurui move is judged too slack for the position. The judgment is context-dependent. A move that looks slow may still be correct if it preserves sente, settles a group, or serves a larger strategic purpose.
