Block

A move against an opponent’s stones that prevents or restricts extension in a chosen direction.

Also known as

Osae

A block—also known as osae—is a move placed directly against an opponent’s stones to stop or limit their extension, connection, or advance. The blocking stone occupies the route along which the opponent would otherwise extend. This often creates a contact position and restricts the opponent’s next moves.

The aim is to contain the opponent, reduce their outward development, or support an attack by denying an extension or connection. Unlike a push, which advances your own stones along a line, a block primarily prevents the opponent from advancing in a particular direction.

The value of a block depends on liberties, cutting points, and the resulting local shape. A block played without sufficient support can allow forcing counterplay.
