A shobute is a do-or-die move intended to determine the outcome of the game or a major fight. Instead of choosing a quiet move, the player launches a decisive attack, starts a major fight, or creates a complicated variation. The player accepts substantial risk for the chance to settle the position immediately.

Shobute is especially important when the position demands an immediate decision, ordinary play is not enough, or a player needs to catch up. Unlike an ordinary sente or forcing move, it is defined by its decisive, high-stakes character and its potential to determine the game. Because it commits the player to a major fight or risky variation, it requires accurate reading. A failed shobute can lose the game.
