Quiescence

A temporary state in which a Go position has no unresolved urgent moves demanding immediate attention.

Also known as

Quiet position

Quiescence, also called a Quiet position, describes a Go position in which no unresolved urgent move requires immediate attention. It usually comes after forcing sequences, tactical weaknesses, or urgent local exchanges have been resolved. Play can then move to another area, or proceed with a less forcing choice.

Recognizing quiescence helps you judge move urgency and decide whether the position has settled enough for strategic comparison or positional play. It is a temporary property of the position, not necessarily the endgame phase, and it does not mean that every remaining move has equal value.

A position that looks quiet may still hide a tactical issue, a sente opportunity, or a move that becomes urgent after something changes elsewhere. Check the whole board before treating the position as fully settled.
