teire

A defensive repair that protects a weakness, often in the endgame.

Teire is a move that reinforces a weakness in your own position, often inside or near your territory and commonly during yose. It may close a defect or add defensive support, stopping a tactical exploitation or reducing the damage from a possible invasion or attack.

The aim is to secure territory, remove bad aji, and avoid a greater loss later. Teire is specifically a repair or reinforcement, not just any endgame move that gains territory.

Timing matters. Playing teire too early can be inefficient, but waiting too long may let the opponent exploit the weakness—sometimes while gaining sente.
