Double atari

A single move that threatens to capture two separate opposing stones or groups at once.

Also known as

Ryou-atari

Double atari is a single move that simultaneously places two separate opposing stones or groups in atari, creating two capture threats at the same time. Because the threats concern separate targets, the opponent usually can answer only one of them. The other stone or group may then be captured or otherwise exploited.

This tactic can gain stones, secure a tactical advantage, or force a favorable continuation by making the opponent choose between two threats. Unlike an ordinary atari, which threatens one capture, a double atari is a tactical result rather than a specific shape or move type. The threats must be genuinely simultaneous and difficult or impossible to answer with one move. However, a single defensive move may sometimes resolve both threats, so the position must be checked carefully.
