The three-space pincer is a pincer move played near a corner, with the pincer stone placed three spaces from an opponent’s approach stone. This spacing attacks or pressures the approached stone while keeping the defining three-space distance between the two stones.
Its purpose is to restrict the opponent’s development in the corner and to begin a joseki or local fight on terms favorable to the player making the pincer. It is a specific spacing within the broader pincer concept, rather than a separate kind of attack. Its value depends on the surrounding stones and on the opponent’s possible counterattacks. A three-space distance is not automatically better than a closer or wider pincer; the position determines whether it is effective.
