Joseki

A Joseki is a standard sequence of Go moves developed through analysis and practical play. It usually resolves a local corner or side situation, with both players receiving a balanced result. Each move answers the opponent’s recognized continuation, and the sequence may finish when the local position is settled or when play elsewhere becomes more urgent.

Joseki offer reliable, well-understood continuations and help players judge local outcomes, shape, sente, and strategic direction. They are not universally correct scripts: their value depends on the surrounding board, and a deviation may be best when global conditions differ. Memorizing moves without understanding their purpose can produce poor play, so Joseki knowledge must always be applied in context.
