vital point

A vital point—also called a key point—is an intersection whose occupation is especially important because it strongly influences the outcome of a local position. It may determine life and death, shape, connection, attack, or defense. Recognizing such points guides move selection and helps reveal decisive tactical resources during reading and positional judgment.

A vital point may create or prevent eyes, cut a group, secure a connection, attack a weakness, or exploit an important shape relationship. It is not tied to a fixed board location or a particular move pattern: its importance comes from the position, and the same point may be vital for either player. A point that looks important by itself is not necessarily vital; its value depends on the surrounding stones, liberties, tactical reading, and order of play.
