Stretch
A directly adjacent extension that strengthens a stone or group.
Also known as
In Go, a Stretch—also called Nobi—is a move that extends a stone or connected group by playing on an immediately adjacent point. Because the new stone is placed directly beside a friendly stone or group, it normally preserves a direct connection. The move often appears along a line after contact, a push, or another local exchange.
A Stretch can strengthen a group, add liberties, maintain connection, and extend its territorial or influential reach. Unlike a jump, such as a one-space jump, it leaves no intervening point between the stones. However, an extension is not automatically good. Its value depends on the group’s liberties, possible cutting points, surrounding influence, and the urgency of the position.
