Jump
A jump develops a stone or chain across an intervening gap, balancing speed with a relatively loose connection.
Also known as
A jump (also called Tobi) is a move played with one or more empty points between the new stone and a friendly stone or chain, rather than directly adjacent to it. The distance is named by the shape: for example, a one-space jump or a two-space jump. Because the stones are not directly connected, the gap may leave them vulnerable to cutting.
A jump extends influence or develops stones quickly while preserving a degree of connection and flexibility. Unlike a direct connection, it deliberately leaves empty points between friendly stones. Unlike an extension, the term is commonly used in relation to an existing friendly stone or chain and emphasizes the intervening gap. A jump can be efficient, but whether it works depends on the surrounding tactical circumstances; it may be cut if those circumstances do not support the connection.
