A one-space jump places a stone two intersections away from a friendly stone in a straight line, leaving exactly one empty point between them. The stones are not directly connected, but the intervening point and the surrounding liberties give the shape flexibility and some resistance to attack.
This move efficiently extends a group while preserving mobility and the potential to connect later. Unlike a direct connection, it deliberately leaves a gap; unlike a larger jump, it has exactly one intervening empty point. That gap can sometimes be cut, so the move’s safety depends on nearby stones, available liberties, and tactical continuations. It is also known as Ikken tobi.
